Jimmy Buffett died Friday at age 76 of Merkel cell skin cancer that he was first diagnosed with four years ago. (MCC)Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare but aggressive form of skin cancer that attacks Merkel cells found at the top layer of skin, typically affects people over 60 and tends to affect more men than women.
MCC remains unclear, though its cause has been linked to UV radiation exposure, an impaired immune system and specific genetic mutations. Treatment options for MCC depend on its stage. In early-stage cases, surgery may provide relief; while for more advanced cases radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies may be used as options.
Prognosis for MCC is generally poor. Five-year survival rates average 50%; however, these chances increase if diagnosed and treated early.
